Meanwhile some representatives from the Better World Society in Poznan and other people will go to Copenhagen with the banner from last years demo in Poznan when the UNFCC Talks took place there.

Poland

The protest in Warsaw was held at the time of the big demo in Copenhagen          12 December 2009. Around 50 people took part and many others had gone to Copenhagen to participate in the demos and meetings there.

The organisers of the protest were: Zieloni 2004 (The Greens 2004 Party), Pracownicza Demokracja (Workers' Democracy), Mlodzi Socjalisci (Young Socialists) and ATTAC Poland. Also the Anti-nuclear Initiative joined in.

Their main slogan was: Protect the Earth, protect people.

The demonstrators presented 7 demands to the COP-conference in Copenhagen and the Polish government:

* To take action to reduce CO2 emissions by 30-40% to 2030 and 90-95% to 2050.

* To make investments that will increase energy efficiency and saving

* To prepare a plan for going away from coal as the main energy source and substitute it by renewable sources, with a concrete investment budget

* To guarantee work places in the new sector of renewable energy sources for miners and others employed in the coal sector

* To give public subsidy for instalation of solar panels, insulating of houses and other measures to save energy and increase energy efficiency

* To increase investments in public, collective transport, which has to be systematically built out, be cheap and easily accessible. Rail transport must be given priority - transport of goods should be moved from trucks on to tracks.

* To create a financial and legal framework for local government to be able to work out a complex and efficient local climate policy.

One participant had build a symbolic several meters tall windmill.

People on the demostration also shouted: System change, not climate change, If the climate was a bank it would have been rescued.

The demonstrators stressed that the Polish government is ignoring the  climate change problem and blocking the discussion about limiting emissions of CO2.

Previous Global Days of Action

On the Global Day of Action on Climate 2008 1,000 marched for the climate in Poznan, Poland - there was also a cycle protest. More news later.

Greenpeace and SolarGen participated in fancy dress costumes in the demonstration that was organised around the UN climate conference in Poznan. Their message: Stop clowning around.

Report from planning meeting of "Global Climate Campaign Poznan 2008" in Poznan - with updates:

GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION  POZNAN 6 DECEMBER 2008

At our planning meeting for Global Day of Action in Poznan we decided the following:

DEMONSTRATION

The main slogan for the demonstration will be CLIMATE NOW!

The demonstration will start at 12.00 on Saturday 6 December from Plac Wolnosci (Freedom Square).  The proposed route of the demo will be from Plac Wolnosci along the streets 27 grudnia, Aleksandra Fredry, Franklina Roosevelta, to the Targi, where the talks are being held, around the Targi and then Towarowa, Franciszka Ratajczaka back to Plac Wolnosci.   (This route is being changed after negotiations with the authorities - more details soon).  Friends of the Earth Youth and some other youth organisations are planning a happening with some clowns etc. at the beginning of the demonstration and there will be a few other "special effects" aswell.

We invite international guests to take part in the demo with your slogans, banners, flags and placards.

We would ask people that plan special happenings etc. during the demonstration to tell us about it before 1 December, so that everything can be integrated.

BICYCLE RIDE

Before the demonstration there will be a bicycle ride through the streets of Poznan. It will be possible to hire bikes and local people will bring their own. The ride will finish where and when the demonstration starts, so that the bikers can join the demonstration. The hired bikes will be collected so that people can continue on foot. Those who have their own bikes will be at the front of the demonstration.

CONCERT

On Saturday night there will be a concert

COMING TO THE DEMO

There will be coaches from Warsaw and Olsztyn and probably some groups going by train from other cities

MEETING – DISCUSSION PANEL

We are planning a joint meeting for Sunday 7 December from 12.00 with a panel of speakers. It will start at 12.00 and will take place in the "Zamek", which is a castle in the center of Poznan.  The title is "How do we win the battle about the climate?". There will be 4 or 5 speakers - Jonathan Neale who will speak in English and a few Polish speakers: dr Andreas Billert a specialist in city planning, Agnieszka Grzybek from the Green Party in Poland and the rest to be confirmed. We will have translators from/into English, so we invite people from outside Poland to come aswell!

If any of your organizations want to hold a conference, seminar etc. at another time and don’t yet have a room, you can write to stepniew[at]amu.edu.pl and we will try to help you (but can’t promise anything). Please write before 20 October and tell us for how many people the room should be.

MEDIA ACCREDITATION

If you need accreditation to cover the climate conference for the media you should write to stepniew[at]amu.edu.pl – as soon as possible.

ACCOMODATION

Poznan City has promised 400 accomodation places in the gyms of two schools from Friday 5 December to Sunday 7 December. The cost will be 15 PLN (around 4 euro) per night per person.

You will have to bring a sleeping bag and a carrymat/mattress.

We will take advance reservations. If it turns out that 400 places is too little, we will try to get more.

Please send your reservation (preferably as a group or if necessary individually) to: stepniew[at}amu.edu.pl

and please write RESERVATION in the title of the mail. We would like to have the reservations before 1 November, so that we have an idea if we will need more places.

If anybody wants accomodation in schools they should write to: stepniew[at]amu.edu.pl

FURTHER INFORMATION, CONTACT, WEBSITE

There will be created a new website with information about the demonstration, how to get to and around in Poznan and other useful information. The address will be www.poznan2008.org but you have to wait a little while before it will be up.

For questions other than accommodation you can write to international[at]poznan2008.org and we will answer you in English.
