Partido Kalikasan (Greens) held simultaneous community-level mass actions in ecosystems where local PK groups operate and link up via webcast to a central event as part of the PK 2nd General Assembly (Physical Culminating Event) in Quezon City.

All events were simultaneously held from 5am to 10 am and webcast from 10am to 12nn at
www.climateactionnow.partidokalikasan.org (weblink to be ready soon!)

A 'Peoples' Caravan on climate change, organised by the Partido Kalikisan and others has toured all the provinces of the country helping to  build for the Global Day of Action on the 12th December when it is hoped to organise 15 simultaneous community-level mobilizations for the Global Action.

Greenpeace and TckTckTck Philippines organised evnts on the  morning of 12th December for the Global Day of Action on Climate Change. Please see the following links

The Ateneo Law School community, led by the Consumer Protection Class of SY 2009 – 2010 joined the ongoing global support for the leaders in Copenhagen and in spreading awareness to the Filipino people of what climate change can do to us and to our floras and faunas through a series of events aiming to inspire and mobilize the public to do their part in saving our planet.A photo exhibit entitled “Before and After” showcasing a diorama of the effects of climate change while at the same time showing the ingenious ways we can to prevent it from happening. A week long paper drive asking students and staff to donate their used papers, newspapers and cartons to be sold later on with the proceeds intended to be donated to a non-governmental organization involved in preserving our rainforests.

On December 12, a march was led by the students traversing from the Ateneo Law School to EDSA- Guadalupe and then back to lend their voices to the global stand against climate change. Their slogan aptly proclaims, “It starts with ME. CHANGE. If we don’t, the climate will.”  The participants donned animals masks and headdresses and caught everyone’s attention while giving out flyers on tips on how to prevent climate change.

The route (EDSA-Guadalupe) was chosen because of its excellent visibility to motorists and residents including the fact that it is one of the most polluted major highway in the country. The small sea of green walking along the highway carrying placards and signs abhorring the effects of climate change was a visual reminder to everyone that we have intergenerational responsibility to care for our home planet, it is after all the only planet where we can survive.

Theme

The RE parade will include everyone from all walks of life- students, runners, stilt-walkers, zip-artists, bikers, basketball players, cheering squads, activists - all aiming for one goal: for the government to pass the Renewable Energy Bill NOW.  Renewable energy is the main theme – which will be embodied in the different parols, hats, costumes or any type of prop each group or individual would like to bring or wear.  The various renewable energy sources that can be used as the group’s theme can be wind, sun/solar, water or a mix of all or any of these.

Message

The RE Parade message is clear: Pass the Renewable Energy Bill NOW. There will also be a link to Bali.

Each group is encouraged to go in their own RE attire or parol.  We don’t want just any type of costumes.  We want to be able to send our message to our audience – thru streamers, placards or thru the props themselves.  The following are examples of messages that groups may adopt as their call to the government:

  • Solar Up/Solarize – with sun or solar power prop
  • We want wind power – with wind as the theme of the group
  • We want Clean Energy
-------------------------------------------

There are now 4 major formations that will definitely have national level campaigns. The Philippine Network on Climate Change (PNCC) will meet on the 28th July and discuss their plans. The Philippines Sustainability Watch Network www.philippines.suswatch.org will also be on board. Likewise, the various local parties of the Partido Kalikasan (Philippine Green Party) www.partidokalikasan.org ; particularly in 3 communities where they won majority town/city councils in the last elections will be joining the campaign in their respective communities. The 3rd group is the Green Convergence which is a broad green movement formation in the Phillipines which has recently decided to focus on the climate change campaign. The last group is the YSDA-Pilipinas Inc. (Youth for Sustainable Development Assembly) www.ysda.org who like the Partido Kalikasan will bring the mobilization down to various local communities around the Philippines. So generally, it will be a series of events (mobilization and public forum) in both the capital and several towns and cities in various provinces across the country. While all of these will also focus on the post Kyoto targets (mitigation concerns), there will also be a significant focus on concerns about national level adaptation: in particular in relation to our current national budgeting process where the Partido Kalikasan is leading a process of lobbying for a Climate Change adaptation national budget starting 2008.
